Entering this exhibition one is drawn into the kaleidoscopic and mesmerising world of Malay textiles. It is an enchanting tale that brings together the Malay World component of the Indian Ocean Trading System - that longue duree formulated by Chaudhuri in his seminal work Asia Before Europe. I spent a giddy 3-hours absorbing the intricate colours and patterns that interweave economic history, shifting geographies of trade, squabbling royals and their power relations, religious migratory routes and the natural world that embed and embody the textiles of what we call Nusantara today. Be prepared to be dazzled by the diversity, inticracy and the sheer beauty put together by John Ang in what is clearly a labour of love.
